Sleeping in your Prius

Can you sleep in a 2019 Toyota Prius? Yes. I was super stoked to learn that my rear seats fold down to provide a perfectly flat sleeping surface! Above is a picture with a Kelty Self Inflating Sleeping Pad completely inflated and laid out.

I’m 5’8″ and I can fully lay down without bending my knees, with an inch or two to spare, which is an incredibly useful benefit of the Prius for me when I want to sleep in my car.

I wanted to try it out so I went to REI and purchased the cheapest self inflating sleeping pad they had ($44.95) but I wouldn’t recommend this sleeping pad for this type of use. You get what you pay for and this pad is not very comfortable. Sleeping on a blanket would probably provide more cushion than this pad. I’ll figure out some use for it eventually but I think I’m going to go back to REI and purchase a much nicer one. One that I’d actually want to use.

Above is a picture of a cheap sleeping bag from Walmart fully rolled out. In order to complete the flat surface, you need to adjust the passenger seat completely forward and then use something to even out the surface. In this picture I’m using a cooler and an Insulated Food Delivery Bag folded in half to support a pillow.

This also happens to be the Insulated Food Delivery Bag that I bought to try out Uber Eats delivery. Multi-use products for the win!

So if you’re wondering whether or not you can sleep comfortably in a Prius, if you’re 5’8″ or shorter, yes you absolutely can. The rear seats in the most cars do not fold down completely flat.

Just another reason why the Prius is one of the best cars ever designed.
